Date of Travel: Oct 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Margaret Holloway Comments: Usually fly to Orlando with virgin but left everything till the last minute this year and couldn't get a flight to suit. Went to travel direct and found exactly what I wanted. Fly drive for half the price of virgin, did not expect anything great for the price but what a great surprise. A jumbo jet with plenty of leg room, all drinks complementary, great flight attendants, good hot food. Will be using excel for all flights in future and will definitely recommend them to family and friends.
Date of Travel: Aug 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Santorini Thira Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Steve Comments: We had to fly with Excel from Gatwick to Santorini and back. We experienced an 8 hour delay in both directions. I've read these reviews before and never really paid that much attention to them but seriously these guys are not worthy or capable of running an airline. In addition a friend flew a week prior and also experienced an 8 hour delay.
After both these delays we had to pay £2 for our headphones and £5 for a blanket. They are just not worth the hassle and it tarnishes an otherwise great holiday.
Think before putting yourself through this…
Date of Travel: Aug 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Bodrum Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: rohanabakhshi Comments: This is easily the worst airlines we have traveled to date. The seats are really cramped with little legroom, the air conditioning is poor, the entertainment did not work, food is terrible and the staff service is poor. I would not travel again in this airline for free and would seriously ask travelers to consider other options if available.
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: Palma Mallorca Airport Flying to: Dublin Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Andrew McLean Comments: If you go on an excel airways package holiday ' expect a delay of 4 hours if lucky or 12 hours that I am experience now. The reps are useless but that is probably the airlines fault as they are cheap - please any sane family wanting a holiday please look elsewhere, it is not worth the money .
Thank you Andrew McLean - stuck in Spain
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Corfu International Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Denise Comments: Arrived at Corfu airport at 2.00 pm on Monday 23 July and eventually left at 1.40 am on Tuesday 24 July! Other people on this flight had already experienced a 10 hour delay at Manchester at the start of their holiday. Staff were clueless. After waiting 5½ hours in 44 degree heat we were bussed out to a taverna for a meal and were left there for 4½ hours being eaten alive by mosquitoes and with no air conditioning. When we were picked up from the taverna to go back to the airport they provided 1 minibus which took approx 20 people - they had over 200 people to transport back! All we got from the reps was "It's not OUR fault." Would never fly with Excel again.
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Bodrum Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Lynda Smith Comments: Was worried about flying with XL after reading some of the previous reviews but thankfully we had a really positive experience and would definitely fly with them again. The flights were cheap, on time, and landed 30 minutes early on return journey. Food was as good as any of its competitors I've flown with on short haul, cabin temperature was perfect, no shivering and begging for blankets. Need to improve their booking confirmation system as it took 4 weeks to arrive and in flight films were rather rubbish but overall it was positive experience.
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: Newcastle International Airport Flying to: Larnaca Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: S Smith Comments: I am very angry about the level of service we received on our return flight from Larnaca with Excel Airways. The plane was shabby. I was seated in row 2 at the front of the aircraft next to 2 sets of toilets which before take off we were told they did not work. (1 toilet for 200+ people not nice) Also the 2 screens at the front of the aircraft did not work at all so we had no entertainment during the flight. We were then asked if we would like any refreshments but everything we wanted had been sold on the outbound flight!! Not very good service surely things should be split so the returning passengers have a choice. They charge you £5.00 for a blanket what a con. The cabin crew were rude and unhelpful they were not bothered that we had no TV screen no toilets nearby and no refreshments. I will not be flying with excel airways again if I can help it.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: VC Bird International Antigua Airport Class: First Class Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mark Marston Comments: First time I'd used XL, and very impressed! Traveled XL One from Gatwick to Antigua, cost was 1200 GBP for 2 adults. Flight out was excellent, great food, constant Champagne. Minor gripe, that XL no longer provides lounge access to One customers, particularly since XL actually stands for eXecutive Lounge!. Entertainment via a personal video player, good movies, TV shows etc.
TIP!!! Get seated near the front, or they will have run out of your favorite choice from the menu. Also, sit on the Left if you want to use the loo at the front.
Flight back not so good. Overnight flight so sleeping is important, but the seats do nor quite go far enough back to be comfortable for a sleep. Also no personal entertainment is given on the return journey. The players are rented out to punters in economy.
Despite the return journey I would use them again.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Belfast International Airport Flying to: Lanzarote Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Not Specified Comments: Excellent flight from Belfast to Lanzarote. The crew on board where fab and ended up talking with pax for most of flights which isn't normal. They're normally hiding being a curtain.
Flight had a slight 15min delay but was made up during flight. Brand new plane no faults, magic!
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Paphos International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Dave Comments: Read some bad and good reviews night before flight so was a bit unsure as to how things would go. Out bound flight no problems good service food ok staff friendly good flight though plane quite old. But still ok. Arrived on time no problems. Flight home delayed approx 40 mins due to check in at Paphos airport. Outbound flight superb old 767 but clean and comfortable and good meal and service. Overall not bad would have no worries flying with XL again.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Barbados Adams Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Ian Comments: We experienced a 5 hour delay on the way out of the country a 20 hour delay on the way back into the country. Plane was dirty, staff lied to me costing me the chance to arrange a hotel in Gatwick and transfer connection flights. Left me stranded with a 4 year old child roaming Gatwick airport at 01:00 in the morning unable to organise a hotel or alternative transport. Cost me a missed connection flight and £212 in train fares. Spoke to other representatives at both airports who stated this was a common occurrence for this airline.
All in all a horrible experience that has left me my daughter and my wife financially out of pocket and physically unwell.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Thessaloniki Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Tom Hargreaves Comments: After being disappointed with the flight to Egypt last year I was hard pressed to give XL, Excel, Ex-Hell etc another chance. We were to fly to Thessalonica in Greece on the 28th June 2007. This is a 3.5 hour flight. Upon arriving at Manchester airport and queuing 1 hour to check in (only one desk open for XL) we were told we were going on holiday then and had to wait 12 hours!!!
A 12 hour delay and they gave us a £3 meal ticket which would afford a sandwich. Then off to a scabby low-rent hostel in Northenden for the day!! My girlfriend and I were absolutely gutted.
12 hours later when we boarded the freezing plane they had the cheek to charge £5 for blankets and £2 for headphones to watch the crappy film they had on.
Any other airline just drafts in another plane but not Excel. The planes they do have are pre 1980's pieces of junk.
The food is overpriced and disgusting, the staff are totally unprofessional and rude (the XL lady calling us to board forgot which country we were flying to!)
I hope this shambles of an outfit goes bust very very soon as the so called service they offer is nothing short of pathetic.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Business Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mark Comments: I have flown with XL airways 12 times over the last couple of years on both Long haul and short Haul routes and have found them to be a reliable, on time and a very good value for money operation.
Aircraft have pushed early on all sectors on all the flights I have taken and I have never been delayed.
I paid to upgrade to the XLONE cabin on my last flight down to Florida and found the service spot on, the champagne flowed and received my first choice of meal from the onboard menu.
You have quilts, Linen Pillow case, amenity Kits and personal in flight Entertainment in the XLONE Cabin.
It really is a first class service with a smile.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Newcastle International Airport Flying to: Dalaman Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Daniel Comments: Flown on a Finnair 757-200 leased to excel I think this aircraft is based in Newcastle both on outward and inward the aircraft was clean the staff was good entertainment was pretty good with movies and radio's on hand I would certainly fly with these again.
Well done Excel.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Dalaman Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Miss A Nolan Comments: Well the flight to Dalaman was fine, although they ran out of food straight away, and we were only in the 10th row, and the food is certainly over priced but that's expected on a plane! Also the TV was broken by our seats and although we paid for earphones which we could not use, they said we had already paid and they couldn't help! But the plane was on time and we got from A to B.
However on the way back, our rep told us the flight to Gatwick was on time so everything seemed fine. However once we arrived at the airport we were shocked that the flight had an indefinite delay, and there was no representative to explain to us why! We check in rather quickly and went through to the departure longue, 5 hours later we were told the plane was ready. Although they gave us a free meal it's not the ideal situation. Again on the way home the food ran out, the entertainment system was broken and having a steward shoving the trolley in the back of your head when trying to sleep, was not very pleasant.
I would not recommend XL Airways!
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Dalaman Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Lynda Drew Comments: We travelled to Turkey with XL and found the flight very good. The plane had lots of room, the seats were comfortable and spacious, and the whole flight experience was very good.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: Luxor Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: budakin Comments: I strongly would not recommend Excel Airways. On our way back from Luxor in June our plane was delayed 4 hours, once we got on the plane we were asked to get off ASAP in a panicky voice. We were all very scared and did not know what was going on.br />
After a long wait captain came along and told us that there was a fire in the baggage hall and that we had to fly without our baggage.
They told us that our baggage should come with the other airplane which was flying to Gatwick as well. Once we got to Gatwick airport we were then told that our luggage has gone to Manchester. We all gave our details and we went home. After 3 days our suitcases came but 2 were missing! I wrote to Excel about the lost baggage and they replied after a long while saying that they will investigate and get back to us which they did not. Beginning of July we finally received the other 2 suitcases but they were in unbelievable state. Suitcase's locks and zips were broken and also it had big cuts on them. Those suitcases werea present and they cost a lot. Straight away I wrote a letter to Excel Airways explaining the state of my suitcases and they wrote back to me saying that I have submitted my letter at a late date. I received it on the 8th July and wrote to them and posted on 10th July, is this late? Does 2 days mean 2 months or something? What kind of customer service is this? I am very disappointed with them and their service. I will never use them or recommend it to anyone.
Date of Travel: May 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Palma Mallorca Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mr G Day Comments: My wife and I have just returned from a week's holiday in Majorca staying at an all inclusive hotel in Alcudia. I checked out the price of this holiday with other tour companies and found that XL were quoting a price that was way less than theirs - £250 each for a weeks AI. Never having heard of them before I wondered what was the catch but decided to risk it as the offer was so good.
Our outbound flight from Manchester took off bang on time there was no problem at all - food and drinks were sold £3.50 for a cheese salad baguette - £0.70 for a soft drinks can
After baggage reclaim at Palma an XL rep showed us straight to a waiting minibus that took straight to our resort. The following day a company rep met us at our hotel for a welcome meeting - she seemed confident and reliable.
Come the day of departure the transport picked us up at the hotel for the return journey to the airport - again no problems, indeed the 737-800 that flew us home was brand new. On final approach to Manchester there was quite a bit of turbulence but the flight crew were very professional.
Given that other guests at our hotel had paid up to twice as much for their holiday as we did and we had a really enjoyable stress free week - we shall be making XL our first choice holiday company from now on
Date of Travel: May 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Grenada Point Salines International Airport Class: First Class Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mr D Tomlin Comments: We flew to Grenada with XL on May 27th. The flight was on time and the food was fine.
We were worried after reading the negative comments posted on some websites, but were happy that experiences were the total opposite.
The crew were good and nothing was too much trouble. We will be flying with XL again!
Date of Travel: Apr 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Fuerteventura Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Miss M L (Surrey) Comments: The flights were near enough on time. The crew were very professional and a lot better than some of the holiday tour operators I have been with. There was a good film on the outbound and inbound flight. The economy seat was the same as any other airlines seat. The food was very good and reasonable. Same with the drinks. The flight itself was fine and the take-off and landing. I have heard bad reports about this airline but this is my second time with them and both times were fine. No complaints.
Date of Travel: Mar 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Not Specified Comments: Travelled with excel countless times and I have never had any problems what so ever. They stand out from any other airline with their superb qualities and they're extremely low costs considering other airlines n excels standards of seating their excel one beats most other airlines business classes by a mile! They're better than any other airline around and they impressed me so much I now have training with excel soon for a cabin crew career which I have changed from being a virgin Atlantic first class cabin crew purser.
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Sharm El Sheikh Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: No Submitted By: Karen McDonald Comments: I would have to say excel are the worst airline we have ever been on we have used them on two trips before. Their seats are so uncomfortable and seats are so small food you can buy on plane is very expensive and poor quality. Staff are not helpful or friendly so unless flight are £20! Each we will not be using them again or recommending them.
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Barbados Adams Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Ron Spicer Comments: We have just returned from our 7 day holiday in Barbados and have had the worst flying experience with XL airways. We would never use this company again and if you read this message - don't even chance going with this airline. When we booked our holiday we never realised XL had such a bad reputation. We would never have flown with them. For a start we were told that we were flighing direct to Barbados only to find out later on that the flight travels via Manchester. This was not even printed on the tickets and many passengers did not even know this was happening until check in.
On the day of deaprture (9th Feb) we arrived at Gatwick 3 hours before departure as instructed only to find the flight was not even on the board. When we went to enquire at the Excel desk they were handing out letters informing us that due to earlier techical difficulties with another plane the departure time had been moved from 8:45am to 14:30. They gave us a paltry £7 refreshment voucher and informed us we could not even proceed to the departure lounge until 11:30 (after arriving at 5:15am!!). Very little information was available thereafter since the XL desk was abandoned and no one had any further information on the likely departure time.
Once through to departures it became clear that the Manchester people had been flown down to Gatwick, however the plane we were all due to travel on was also now experiencing technical difficulties. 2.30pm came and went and there was still no announcements or information on the board. We had to go to the airport enquiries desk to find out that the engineers needed to do scheduled maintenance (apparently changing an oil filter). I dont understand how this was scheduled since we had received a written letter with the scheduled departure at 14:30. We were then given a further £4 voucher (which was a joke considering we had been in the airport for nearly 12 hours) and told to return for a further update at 4pm. At this point an Excel rep came down to speak to the angry passengers. He offered very little information other than a nut on the oil filter was stuck, which is why the plane is still delayed. He asked people to contact customer services even though this service had also been swtched off (due to the adverse weather!!! - the snow had thawed by this point). About an hour later he then changed his story - the nut is off but the problem is they dont have all the parts to replace the oil filter. Then finally he revealed we would have to wait for a replacement part to be delivered from Heathrow (during the rush hour at this point). Eventually at 18:30 (after 13 hours at Gatwick) we finally boarded the plane. The result was the first evening of our holiday lost.
The flight itself was not too bad, however we found the cabin crew to be a little off hand despite all the problems experienced.
On the reuturn flight we thought the same could not possibly happen. We even boarded the plane on time! However in true XL fashion it was too good to be true. We were then told that the plane had technical problems and engineers had to board the plane. They then switched off all power on the aircraft so we sat in total darkness for nearly a minute. When we finally did depart we had been sitting on the plane for nearly an hour and a half. After deaprture the cabin crew then announced that not enough blankets or headsets were packed so only those in first class would receive these items. We had to sit through an 8 hour flight without any entertainment. No free drink was offered since again they didnt have enough to go around! When the plane finally landed in Manchester we were promised an hours turnaround. However after an hour we were then told that "scheduled maintenence" was needed.... How can it be possibly scheduled! By the time we left for Gatwick we had again been sitting on the tarmac for over 2 hours. The angry passengers confronted the cabin crew who could not offer anything more than a glass of tap water since no food or drink was left on the plane.
The whole set up at Excel is appalling and as a Travel and Tourism A level teacher I will certainly use this airline as the worst case study of customer service. The lies, lack of information and shoddy care should really put you off flying with this airline. Yes some reviews are positive, however these people were obviously lucky. The week before we departed for Barbados the service was delayed and 2 weeks prior the outbound flight was delayed for 27 hours. I just cannot understand why every time the plane lands anywhere it needs engineering work - is this really what you want to fly on? Like me ... I think not!!!
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Barbados Adams Airport Class: First Class Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Thomas Ralston Comments: My wife and I travelled to Barbados last month travelling XLOne - allegedly first class.
Under NO circumstances would I ever travel with this airline again. The "First Class" seats were less comfortable than the ones we had with Easyjet. They were padded above shoulder level to such an extent that they threw our heads forward into a most uncomfortable degree. The so-called recline facility was so poor that it was hardly worth using.
The food was very poor and the cabin staff were so amateurish as to beggar belief. We were very late into Gatwick with the result that we were unable to take advantage of the lounge facilities we had booked and paid for.
The vaunted "priority" treatment of our luggage was such that we were among the last to receive ours at both Barbados and Gatwick. We felt that our bags MUST have been deliberately delayed, for whatever reason!
If you are content with being treated like cattle, carry on. Otherwise - you have been warned.
I could write for a long time on this airline, but I would simply bore readers.
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Sharm El Sheikh Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: V Banks Comments: We have just returned from Sharm el sheikh on Excel. The outbound flight was on time. The seating on the plane is certainly not comfortable, they may be leather, but with very little or no padding. The staff appeared more interested in chatting amongst themselves. The snack bar food available was very overpriced and we were advised that on the return journey we should eat in Sharm Airport as they did not pick up more food as they would probably sell out on the outward flight.
Our return journey was terrible ~ we were delayed. We were supposed to depart 17.55 but did not depart until 9.30pm. When we checked in at the airport, there was a letter on the check in desk advising you that a £5 voucher would be available, however, if anyone has ever been to Sharm Airport, you don't have time to read detailed letters as you are being rushed through check in and trying to ensure that you receive the departure card to complete, boarding passes etc is almost impossible. Once we completed the departure cards, we realised we didn't have any vouchers and there was no one from Excel around to ask. We then went into the departure area. Only once we were on the plane did it become clear that we were going to be delayed further in that we had to land in Greece to change over Crews!!!! We also were told that everyone had had meals in the airport!! Alot of the people on the plane were in the same situation as us and had not received these meals nor had anything since breakfast time. We spoke to the air stewardess who advised us that they also had nothing on the plane apart from crisps or chocolate. To make matters worse we had been allocated row 40 which is the seats at the very back which you can't recline and have less legroom. Both my husband who is over 6ft tall and myself found it very uncomfortable. As there were spare seats we asked if we could move up to than, there was a bank of three a few rows in front, but we were told we couldn't as the crew may be staying on when they land at Greece and they would need the seats. (In other words they didn't want the ones we had as they were so uncomfortable!) To ensure we didn't take these seats, they took there suitcases out of the overhead lockers and placed them on the seats!! They did say we could move to two isle seats further up the plane which we did as my husband could not have sat on the plane for what turned out to be 8 hours in row 40! Surely knowing that there had already been a delay in departure and to be a further delay whilst they changed over the crew in Greece, they could have arranged for some snacks/food to be brought on at the same time as we were on the runway for about an hour, and they knew that not all passengers had received food if any!!!!!
Delays are out of any airlines control, but surely passenger welfare should be high on the list along with courteous staff ~ Excel are certainly one of the worst airlines I have ever travelled with
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Luxor Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Kayt Nesham Comments: I have traveled years ago with this company, but NOW they have exceeded my expectations, I am disabled and they were excellent, allocated the right seat for my needs, gave the correct assistance from check in to arrival, the crew were helpful and kind, the meals Diabetic were not on board but they sorted everything in the blink of an eye. Nothing was too much trouble and I found it much more comfortable than the other Charter flights going to Egypt. I am due to fly with them again on the 11th April this time to Sharm el Sheikh

I was told if I wanted to fly I would have to pay 75 euros excess, which I did after complaining, as I found it hard to believe we were so much over. I was told if I was not happy to take the matter up in Manchester. This could not be done as no one was about to explain about our problem to We reweighed our bags at Manchester and they came to 65kgs. Emails been sent about situation telephone calls made still no answers.
Date of Travel: Jan 2007 Flying from: Bristol Airport Flying to: Gran Canaria Las Palmas Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Jane Mullen Comments: We were a bit dubious about booking with Excel (Air Malta) as we had never heard of them. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. The aircraft was brand new. Our seats were all together, which we hadn't booked and we were given free food (which was lovely), which we hadn't booked either.
The only down side was the poor in flight entertainment, it was all mime and silent movies (Laurel and Hardy) we'd taken our headphones to plug in, hoping for a good movie.
We've booked 2 more flights with Excel and hope they live up to the first.

No information as to food reasons etc. Just bussed to Hotel (who did not expect us). Excel however did manage cut the line of credit by 1pm but still could not fax us passengers anything.
I agree main fault no communications with passengers and do NOT appear to supply promised services especially no hot towels, no executive lounge etc etc...
Date of Travel: Dec 2006 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Denise Bates Comments: This is the first time me and my family have used this Airline.
Cannot fault Booking In - On time etc etc.
The Crew were horrible going. They treated us like we were cattle. Coming back what a difference - Couldn't do enough for your welfare on the beverage front.
Going they take all liquids away from you and then expect you to go 10.25 hours with only one small water(and I mean small), I small coffee and a J2O. They wouldn't even let us buy any - the crew coming back said this was not usual. I thought you were supposed to stay hydrated on an aeroplane especially for this length of time. If you knew this before boarding you would have got yourself 6 bottles for your family in the departure lounge.
The flight was on time both going and coming back. The legroom was quite good for economy as well. The only thing is the complete lack of TVs. Only 2 in the whole of the economy department. All Booking In staff were all a credit to the Company who we came across.

It was a 7 hour flight all we got was one meal and one drink the in flight. Entertainment was a joke they put on home alone then put it on again. Was told by the captain because of the bad turbulence the cabin crew was unable to serve tea or coffee, but funny enough first class were still being served tea and coffee. Never saw a cabin crew for over 3 hours. They made me feel like an animal. I will never ever step foot on there planes ever again.

Charged for a meal £10 per head only to find out when on the plane that meals are free with Air Malta. The air hostess said that all Air Malta meals are free and that people are often being charged for them when they book a flight. Don't book a meal! We still have to try and claim the money back. The free meal was inadequate so take some sandwiches with you. Breakfast was a small bread roll and a sponge pudding. Don't think I'd go with them again.

We flew on a 767 which is a older aircraft but gave us more leg room than some newer aircraft.
We were treated very well on the flight with plenty of free drinks, which you do not normally get in economy. The food was above average.
Overall it was an enjoyable flight there and back.

Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Gary Spencer Comments: Okay I paid £500 for 4 seats to Tenerife which is very good in my opinion. The plane was clean, seats not too bad as long as you are not a big person. Service was what I would call adequate, lets face it customer service in any Uk based company leaves a lot to be desired compared to other Nations.
What is highly recommended is to take your own food because first of all the food on the plane is crap and also at extortionate prices. They had Paninis at £4.50 but they didn't heat them up or flatten them, they came out like a cold baguette and tasted awful.
Recommended for flight timeliness, cleanliness and low cost.

I will certainly travel with them again and recommend it to any friends.

Staff abrupt while serving the passengers; staff spent more time chatting to each other than their passengers; in-flight cinema hopeless - there and back both main films were cartoons and the two old TV. programmes were exactly the same both ways. Volume was hit and miss and NO radio stations at all! Several crying babies received NO attention at all from the staff. And it was a miracle that a child was not scalded by drinks being passed to their struggling parents.

Already booked again for September 07 but with ocean Florida who have beat travel city with price I have just paid £1750 for three with Thomas cook flights luxury car and also luxury seats on aircraft with leather seats champagne priority boarding etc. The same seats with travel city cost £299 pounds per person also we have entrance to executive lounge at Manchester airport on departure. Can’t wait what luxury.
Date of Travel: Sep 2006 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Rhodes Diagoras Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Mr A J Baacke Comments: Traveling with my wife and adult daughter to Rhodes, on arrival at Gatwick 3 hours before the flight departure, we joined a 300 yard queue for check in which was not actually open at the time. Fair enough but most times other airlines open their check in desks as early as this which results in fairly small queues.
Once opened things moved along at a reasonable pace but still took nearly an hour before we reached the desk where we were told that we were 20klg overweight. As this was right in the middle of the latest security scare and everyone was being told to put everything in the suitcase as virtually no hand baggage was allowed on board, I feel that we were being penalised for following and complying with the latest security directives. We were not issued with our boarding passes until £75 had been paid at another desk, I was in a queue of many, who were paying similar sums and more for the same reason.
The actual flight although about 2 hours late was not bad and the free food was o.K. did notice that quite a lot of older people checking in had quite small suitcases and that the flight was half empty going out so conclude that weight was not an operational problem.
On the return journey, the same suitcases with perhaps a little more weight were checked in at Rhodes without problem or payment and we had a fairly good flight home.
I therefore conclude that Excel Airways were taking advantage of the security situation at the time as a way of cynically raising extra revenue for themselves. I subsequently wrote to the Managing Director about my concerns and after about two months received a reply from one of his minions with a list of standard procedure negative answers to my questions which did nothing to reconcile my concerns. He does though find time to sign the emails which they keep sending, telling me what a great airline they are, etc.but I am voting with my feet and looking for an airline that cares about its clients, even cattle class like us. As providers, they should all remember that quality cannot totally be sacrificed for price, they have to get the balance right, at the moment, Excel fall a long way short.
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Dalaman Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Martin Littlewood Comments: Unfortunately our first experience of Excel will be the last. In over 10 years of regular summer flights (with the normal experience of delays and technical problems) this carrier managed our first major delay in the return flight of a staggering 33 hours! They did provide a satisfactory hotel near the departure airport- but proved poor in providing good representation and updated information at the hotel and at the departure airport. We were given no choice in their return to Gatwick airport requiring extended travel transfer to our intended arrival at Manchester extending our total travel time to over ten hours.
We had the definite experience of being treated as 'second class' individuals when their service fails. The return flight being overbooked, due to a smaller capacity aircraft only available, with over 30 ticket holding customers effectively being turned away from the check in. Prior to this experience on the return flight I would have not had a problem with this carriers' service. But to XL on this and future occasions - no cigar!
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: East Midlands Airport Flying to: Rhodes Diagoras Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: M Hadfield Comments: Unfortunately Excel were very poor in almost every aspect of the flight they provided. Firstly Excel subcontracted the flight to Uk Air who were a totally unknown airline to me and they use very old and very worn MD83 aircraft type. The flight was delayed but only by 30 minutes, there was no in flight entertainment so my eleven year old son was extremely bored. The meal consisted of some sort of chicken dish with a bread roll and mineral water in a very small plastic container, the main meal was cold and not edible. The flight home was even worse with a Turkish airline providing the aircraft due to some sort of mechanical failure of the ageing UK jets md 83 so yet more delays, this time 2 hours. Unfortunately again there was no in flight entertainment provided in the Boeing 737 and the main meal was a cheese roll with tea or coffee. Having flown with many airlines I can honestly say Excel were the very worst I have ever encountered by a large margin. Avoid Excel!!!
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Cardiff Airport Flying to: Palma Mallorca Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Paul Hopkins Comments: We were due to fly from Cardiff on19th August 2006 to Palma. On arriving at the airport we were told by check-in staff that there was a problem and we would have to be bussed to East Midlands. There was no rep at the airport and no one could give us any information as to the problem or expected delay. We were handed a letter that was dated the previous day and indicated that Excel knew of the problem the day before.
We were eventually delayed for over 10 hours and were given a paltry £10 voucher for food. The delay meant that we missed our transfer at Palma and incurred additional expense to get to our hotel.
The return flight was a similar nightmare. It was again delayed and no explanations were provided. We ended up over 7 hours late and were given a voucher to the value of 8 Euros. This was barely enough to buy a Mc Donald’s. By this time all the passengers were extremely angry as we had been treated like cattle. In response the crew provided barefaced lies to passenger’s questions and the captain issued a warning to have people arrested if they continued questioning the crew.
I have complained to Excel and they have ignored my e mails until it became apparent that I was aware of who had read them and I was not going to go away. They have now tried to fob me off with an apologetic letter claiming that they have discharged their responsibilities.
The bottom line is don't touch Excel with a barge pole. If you do it will end in tears.
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Kefalonia Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Richard Brown Comments: All airlines have problems. It's the way they deal with them that matters and distinguishes a good airline from a poor one. XL Airways only distinguish themselves through poor customer service. Our family suffered a 7 hour delay - bad enough, but made worse by a complete lack of information, and then a refusal to provide any compensation citing the new EU regulation, even though they don't comply with it themselves. We are not alone see http://www.exhellways.co.uk
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Barbados Adams Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Paul Malone Comments: Booked 2 return tickets in economy for £1200. Service was appalling, flight was delayed, extra legroom seats that we had booked and paid for were overbooked so had to accept any seat that was going. In 20 years of traveling I would say it was the worst airline I have ever flown with.
Date of Travel: Jul 2006 Flying from: Cardiff Airport Flying to: Sharm El Sheikh Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Amanda Comments: We had a fantastic flight, no delays, and in fact our return flight left 15 mins early. Very comfortable and we are not lovers of airline boil in the bag food, but this was lovely, and more offered if any spare meals, not wanting to be seen greedy this was declined. Staff much friendlier than other airlines, however this year trying our luck with BMI only due to price!! Please, give excel air a go. Remember there will be some unhappy people but consider the amount of passengers they fly, and you only hear about the bad ones!!
Date of Travel: Jul 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Sharm El Sheikh Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Tony Taylor Comments: Had my first flight with these guys, at 45 years of age, being a very very nervous flyer I was made to feel safe and nothing was too much trouble. The plane was very clean. The staff couldn't do enough for you. The food wouldn't win any awards but did fill a hungry gap plan to fly to Egypt again this summer and would recommend excel to any one, well done guys.
Date of Travel: Jul 2006 Flying from: Newcastle International Airport Flying to: Mahon Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: George Maddox Comments: DO NOT USE THIS AIRLINE!! They do not deserve a penny of anyone's hard-earned cash. We were delayed over 22hrs with no sign of an Excel employee. Letter of complaint on our return was ignored till I chased them up. They hide behind terms & conditions. If you buy a ticket only (as we did) hey only have to get you there - no guarantees as to when!! Their eventual reply was full of factual errors - they claimed the delay was caused by no replacement plane being available but we DID fly on a different plane. How do these people get away with it?
Are there no measures the regulatory boards can take to revoke their licences? I can only repeat - DO NOT USE EXCEL AIRWAYS!!
Date of Travel: Jul 2006 Flying from: Madrid Barajas Airport Flying to: Samos Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Beryl Ryan Comments: We were a little concerned as had heard bad reports of this Airline, but our experience of them from Manchester Airport was excellent. The flight was just a little late out, but not by much and we were kept informed. We were on time on return journey. The crew were friendly and very helpful. The food was surprisingly good for airline food. The whole flight was really good. We had been warned that Samos is somewhat of a difficult airport to land at and only a few pilots are able to land at it. I'm delighted to say that our pilot was superb. We are traveling with Excel again this year and looking forward to the experience.
Date of Travel: Jun 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Olly Comments: We have been travelling with this airline for a number of years and have always found them extremely efficient. The planes are clean and many are new, the staff are always friendly and polite the entertainment is ok if you want it, children are given packs of book crayons beach bag and beach ball.
The only blip we have experienced is they ran out of hot meals on two occasions but they supplied salads and sandwiches instead.
I have seen contradictory views about this airline but they are on time most of the time if they are not it’s not their fault. I hope to travel with them for many years to come.
Date of Travel: Jun 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Gran Canaria Las Palmas Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Jacqueline Howe Comments: I’ve decided to leave this review as I’ve heard one or two bad reports about Excel in the media
We went to Gran Canaria last June we'd booked it on the internet and went a week later
We’d never heard of Excel and as we'd never had to collect tickets on departure before we were full of trepidation but we needn’t have worried
We found the Excel desk straight away the lady there was very helpful located our tickets straight away and wished us a good time
I cant comment on the on board food as we didn’t book a meal but there were warm paninis on sale and chocolate crisps nuts etc and drinks of course
The cabin crew were friendly and great with our 8yr old son
I hope this is of help to anyone about to fly with Excel
Date of Travel: May 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Sharm El Sheikh Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: No Submitted By: Not Specified Comments: Having read the reviews on XL airways, I just thought I'd add this to agree what a totally unpleasant experience I had. Much the same as others, delays etc, however, we ended up being delayed at Sharm El Sheikh and being flown back to Gatwick where we had to scramble for a coach to take us to Manchester. The excuses? Technical problems, the staff had gone over their flying quota etc. We never even got offered a drink! We arrived in Manchester 9/ 10 later than expected! I also flew to Spain for a few days a month later, same problems as before...would never knowingly fly with XL again....even Easyjet offer a more comfortable service.
Date of Travel: May 2006 Flying from: East Midlands Airport Flying to: Santorini Thira Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Janet Allen Comments: We booked this specific holiday as the flight was from east midlands to Santorini, only to be informed at book in that we would be taken to Gatwick !! Along with a 6 hrs delay. Coaches were outside East Midlands airport to take us all down to Gatwick arriving there around about 8am (rush hour traffic!)
It all became clear after talking to various other passengers that had had their flights moved from Birmingham departure that they were combining flights to fill one plane that was departing from Gatwick. We were told lies by the reps, about why we were flying from Gatwick as different stories were told to different passengers.
There was then another surprise in store for us all..... As we found out that there were passengers on our flight who were going to Crete, and this would still be classed as a "direct flight".
The cabin crew were very unhelpful and unco-operative and could hardly speak English. The aeroplane appeared to be very old and the seats were very uncomfortable.
There were numerous other problems with the flights both going out and coming back (not to mention calling into Crete on way home from Santorini)
We will never use this airline again, and I will even go so far as to say it has put us off travelling abroad, and have now booked a barge for this year.
It appears that the airlines can change, departure airport, departure times and dates as well as accommodation etc without any repercussions. This is detailed on the reverse of the airline tickets.
I have since taken this up with excel airways and Kosmar holidays (who had then recently merged) who almost confirmed the above.
Why do they go the expense of publishing brochures for us to choose a holiday of our choice, when they can change your holiday to suit their needs !
Date of Travel: May 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Barbados Adams Airport Class: Business Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Billy Comments: XL you get what you pay for in my view. Delays possibly though I have only had one which I agree was not handled well.
But if you pay the little extra for XLone you get decent seats, decent leg room, decent service, decent food and a pleasant experience.
It is not upper class or club, but then it is about 1/4 of the price. Having traveled extensively simply you nearly always get what you pay for.
Date of Travel: Feb 2006 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Gran Canaria Las Palmas Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: No Submitted By: Arthur Meakin Comments: As our flight was for four hours we enquired about the availability of food on the plane. Our first enquiry was at the booking hall both to the person allocating our tickets and also to a XL attendant in the ticket area, we also spoke to an XL attendant before we boarded the plane. Their answers varied from - not sure to you would be safer to buy something before you boarded as we often run out.....
The return flight was via Thomson Fly (as XL couldn't muster a plane) who were very much more helpful and surprise surprise all passengers were given a meal.......
In addition as instructed by XL we called a number (three times) 48 hours prior to our inbound journey to check the return flight details. We listened to a pre-recoded message which gave details (faster then a facing commentator at Ascot) which was difficult to understand. Not once did we hear any details referring to our flight.
Overall disappointed by the whole experience particularly as we were continually being told that XL were the flyers favourite airline. Never again.
Date of Travel: Jul 2005 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Puerto Plata Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Mr C Randall Comments: On the 25/07/05 we booked a 14 day holiday to the Dominican Republic with Thomas Cook. Although we had paid extra to pre-book our seats there was total confusion at Excel Airways check-in at Gatwick Airport. We checked - in and Excel Airways staff failed to put a security tag on one of two suitcases. We noticed it and told him the suitcase would get lost. We asked to speak to a supervisor. That request was ignored. The plane was delayed 4 hours. We did not receive a bottle of champagne as ordered on the outward journey. When we arrived at Punta Cana as predicted one suitcase was missing. This contained all my wife\'s clothing and all the clothing for the two boys. We received no assistance at all from the Thomas Cook Rep. Not even a simple Tooth Brush. The return journey was even worse. There were huge arguments between passengers who had pre-booked seats and did not receive them. There was several visible defects on the Aircraft namely condensation dripping from the light units above our seats. The lights kept switching themselves on / off all night. The attendant\'s bell rang all night due to a fault. Two passengers next to me had seats with broken backs. We could not recline our seats due to the close proximity of the seat rows without injuring the person behind.
Excel Airways initially told us to claim from the Travel Insurance and the claim would be dealt with under the Warsaw Convention. This we have since found out is incorrect. The claim now comes under the Montreal Protocol. Thomas Cook has stated they will only respond to a letter for compensation from a solicitor.
Barclay Travel Insurance initially offered us £117. Then they offered £321. Their final off was £381. This was rejected. Considering we only claimed £443, after deducting £105 for excess and 10% for wear and tear.
I will clearly state we have not received a single penny from Thomas Cook or Excel Airways. It took 5 months to even get a letter from Excel Airways confirming the loss. After 10 months and hundreds of letters we have received the square root of zilch. The solicitor advised us to cancel the claim, write it off as there was no point pursuing it any further. It would cost us a lot of money on top of what we have already lost. The Airline Industry can continue to maintain their high profit margins and there was nothing we could do about it. We have dealt with the Insurance Ombudsman, the Air Transport Users Council, Thomas Cook, Excel Airways and Barclays Travel Insurance. Apparently we have to provide receipts for every single item in our suitcase!! I thank god we were not claiming for a far worse incident. Next time you buy a tube of toothpaste, please keep your receipt. You never know when you will need it. The solicitor told me next time I travel to write an inventory for every single item, have it photographed and have receipts for every single item. How ridiculous has the Travel Industry become?
I believe it was appalling the way we have been treated not to mention travelling on an Aircraft that was not properly maintained.
Please note on the 25/07/05 Gatwick Airport was full of Armed Police officers. There was CCTV everywhere especially since the recent London bombings. Yet a large suitcase can just disappear. That has very serious Security Implications for passengers travelling through Gatwick Airport.
General Comments
I do appreciate you do not receive first class treatment when travelling on Charter Airlines. Having travelled on numerous charter flights around the world, including several from Third World countries, in comparison Excel Airways have failed to convince me they provide a quality service.
From my last experience I find it very hard to believe they have actually received awards!!
From the above you will appreciate why I cannot recommend Excel Airways. It is bad enough to be able to predict the loss of your own luggage. Even worse to have your holiday ruined, but to be offered pittance after excessive reductions were made by the Insurance Company. Not a single penny in compensation was offered by either Thomas Cook or Excel Airways.
