Date of Travel: Aug 2007 Flying from: Larnaca Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Ben Cowley Comments: Our Flight back from Larnaca was delayed for over 40 hours of which most of that time was spent lying on the floor of the departure lounge not knowing what was going on or when we were leaving. We were provided with next to no information as to when or flight would be departing which resulted in us being trapped in the airport for over 24 hours. Although put up in a hotel for 12 hours the whole situation was an absolute nightmare and I will no longer even consider flying with Monarch airline as I am sure neither will the other 300 passengers who flew with me! appalling experience!
Date of Travel: Aug 2007 Flying from: Birmingham International Airport Flying to: Rhodes Diagoras Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: G Wilkinson Comments: Brilliant.. Cabin crew wonderful, answered my queries food typical airline food, edible actually not enough because I like a lot of food ha-ha, availability of refreshments was good too. And as for the timing of departing/arrival was fantastic. Recommend monarch anytime. Many thanks to all the crew on sat 18th august and 25th august.
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Premium Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Neil Murphy Comments: They were unable to provide a premium service despite booking this with them and the only reason I booked this was the opportunity for extra leg room on the return journey
The flight was two hours late leaving Sanford three hours late arriving and included a stopover in Newfoundland which added to the ‘nightmare journey' because the substitute aircraft was a twenty year old airbus A300
The toilets on take-off were disgraceful smelling heavily of urine. By the end of the flight the situation had got worse despite being supposedly cleaned on our stopover
The food was awful and being served warm white wine did not help the situation – the breakfast was just fit for ‘human consumption'
This was my first (and last) experience of Monarch Airlines and I am afraid that I was utterly un-impressed with the service provided and would recommend everyone to steer clear of this Company
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Malaga Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Paula Holmes Comments: I have solved a mystery! I now know why Monarch does not offer any complimentary food or drink. It's because if the passenger in front of you puts their seat back (as most people do), you cannot put your tray table down to put a glass on. The trolleys go up and down selling blankets, drink, game cards, grotty food, magazines, perfume, and charity collection. A passengers does not get a glass of water, even a peanut and I paid £196 for this budget airline fight. Ground staff were rude and sour, however FA's were jolly.
Date of Travel: Jun 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Male International Airport Class: Premium Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Paula Holmes Comments: Well worth the extra money to upgrade to Premium on long haul. Access to the nice calm VIP lounge at both Gatwick and Male, and a friendly greeting on board. Brand new plane. Leather seats, water bottle and an excellent amenity pack. Drinks served with doubles. Huge lunch with a smoked salmon, salad, chicken dish, large plate of cheese and choc mousse. The captain & crew were fantastic, and I saw they were particularly sweet to the honeymoon couples which was lovely. I travel regularly on Virgin Atlantic Upper Class on which you get more room, but the general service was 10 times better with Monarch. However 3 hours late departing was very irritating.
Date of Travel: Mar 2007 Flying from: London Luton Airport Flying to: Lanzarote Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Sue Burr Comments: Outbound Flight left on time and arrived 30 minutes early. Inbound we had a 2 hour flight delay, apparently because mechanical problems at Luton before leaving.
Food was good, (not as good value as other airlines we have traveled with). No starter or cheese and biscuits, but the price was the same and it was much the same quality as other airlines we have traveled with.
Seats were not very comfortable but quite good on leg room.
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: London Gatwick Airport Flying to: Malaga Airport Class: Premium Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: John Munroe Comments: On 20/2/07 dep LGW for AGP on flight ZB 736. Departure delayed by 25 minutes and arrived 10 minutes late. Cabin staff were dressed smartly and their attention to passengers needs was above average. Excellent attention to detail when the safety briefing was carried out and even the captain made special reference for need to put one's reading matter down so full attention could be made to the briefing. By no means the airlines fault, but there was niggly slight to moderate chop for the majority of the trip which the flight deck tried to minimise by descending from 37000 to 31000 without much improvement. Extra legroom seat more than adequate.
Date of Travel: Feb 2007 Flying from: Malaga Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Premium Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: John Munroe Comments: Departed on time from AGP and arrived on time at LGW. Cabin staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Good public announcements along with very good safety briefing. The extra length seats which cost £15 per person are well worth the money especially for me at 6ft 2ins. Chose to buy the two course lunch which was sufficient in quantity and as good as one would expect to get for the price (£6) which included orange juice and coffee/tea. I have read a few disparaging reviews about Monarch but I was very happy with everything especially for the price. I would use Monarch again.
Date of Travel: Jan 2007 Flying from: Goa International Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: Mrs Day Comments: We were over 20 hours delayed. We stood in a queue continually for over 5 hours. We were not kept up to date of the time of departure. The food was absolutely disgusting, and the staff were unpleasant and unhelpful. The comfort left a lot to be desired.
Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Palma Mallorca Airport Class: Low Cost Seat Recommended: Yes Submitted By: V Shaw Comments: I have travelled several times with monarch airlines and I must say I find the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The planes are very comfortable. Nothing is too much trouble they work very hard for us passengers. I am pleased to say that I would travel every time with them if I could. Well done monarch!
Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Cancun Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: David Allan Comments: We flew from Manchester to Cancun via Gatwick as part of a late-availability KUONI package.
Having experienced the Monarch service we would not recommend this unless like us you either get a good late-availability £price. This is because the legroom, seat comfort, food, entertainment and service are strictly short-haul standard and not suitable for a 10-12 hour long-haul flight. This flight is seriously long, even without delays (and we suffered delays on departure for both legs of the journey including sitting on the tarmac apron at Cancun coming back for 2 hours as they'd forgotten to get the necessary documentation to enter Mexican airspace).
Monarch charge for everything, the quality of food and entertainment is low and Monarch’s punctuality record is poor (2 weeks before our holiday the actual connection from Manchester to Gatwick was cancelled). For us the £250 Premium cabin upgrade each would have effectively almost paid for another person to come with us, and still only takes you to the Economy class of most scheduled airlines. For this reason we would not book another holiday with Kuoni using Monarch regardless of how good the actual deal or hotel was. We definately wouldn't fly with Monarch again and will vote with our wallets.
Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Edinburgh Airport Flying to: Dalaman Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Miss Sami Morgan Comments: The flight going out to Turkey was FAB. Gorgeous leather seats PLENTY of leg room (even @ 5ft 5in - I like room to slouch) very comfy, in-flight movie was good (mi3) food not bad (never thought of booking veg option oops) cabin crew friendly and helpful, more or less slept the whole way there. However flight back to Edinburgh was less than FAB.
We had been split up, my mum and I were opposite each other in the aisle but my 6 year old little sister was 4 rows AWAY from us, this caused us a lot of distress in the end I swapped seats with my sister and the cabin crew were VERY helpful @ getting them seated together - which was more than the booking desk staff were - although they were now seated together the damage had already been done and neither of us got much sleep (it was a 2am flight home).
I have since written off a letter to Thomson's regarding our complaint but as yet they have failed to reply???? I'm not saying don't fly with Thomson's or Monarch as I appreciate things can go wrong but when a company like Thomson's fails to reply to their customers it does put them in a bad light!
Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Cardiff Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Mr Richard Bryan Comments: Not very comfortable for a flight to Florida. Had a job to see video screens for people's heads in the way. Food was poor quality. Had to pay for headsets. The only good thing about the flight was the cabin crew, very helpful. Wrote to monarchs customer services with a complaint, it took three months to receive a reply and then the complaint wasn't resolved. My wife and I will never fly with monarch again.
Date of Travel: Oct 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Martin Morgan Comments: After reading quite a few of these reviews about Monarch I felt I must make some kind of comment.
I find Monarch Airlines extremely good at what they do considering the price war that is currently ensuing.
I have used the airline quite a few times and have never really had any problems with any aspect of the journey. Yes of course sometimes the headset doesn't work or maybe you're a little delayed but the flight is all part of the holiday and you make the most of it. To all those moaning people I say , if you want luxury PAY for it !!!. Are we turning into a Victor Meldrew society or what!
Keep it up Monarch 5 Stars

Date of Travel: Sep 2006 Flying from: Kos International Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: LN Green Comments: Monarch cancelled one flight (not ours).Olympic Holidays took us off our original flight and sent us to Manchester instead of Gatwick without a word of consultation or explanation, leaving us with a mini bus journey of approximately 5 hours extra. Will I be using Monarch/Olympic Holidays again? Not if you paid me. Besides the general disregard for passenger’s upheaval and stress, the plane was packed like sardines in a can.
Date of Travel: Sep 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Thessaloniki Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: J Welch Comments: My wife and I flew to Halkidiki on a late deal, and having been told "Monarch are fine for legroom" by the agent, never thought about it until we were shoved on the very last row of the aircraft.
Boeing 757 G-MONC is out of date, squalid, and needs replacing.
I am 6'1, and in front of us was a man at least 6'6. I could not eat as the tray table was at an angle, therefore any liquid had to be hand held. My suggestion is to thoroughly research the airline before laying down a deposit on any holiday. The cabin crew were the shining light in the flight. Nothing was too much trouble, although the return flight was rather like a sellathon rather than anything else. Excellent timings and good landings.
THERE IS NO LEGROOM ON MONARCH AIRCRAFT
If you are over 5'2 then buy a canoe. You will be more comfortable
Date of Travel: Sep 2006 Flying from: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Chris Brown Comments: Flew back from Tenerife with Monarch after a group holiday. There was nothing overly bad about the flight that I feel I have make special mention of.
Being over 6 foot I did find the legroom poor, pretty normal for a charter flight. We have an 18 month old who wanted to run up and down the aisle, which we allowed and supervised for short periods - much to the disgust of the cabin crew who were busy selling their wares.
The food was above average.
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Heraklion Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: C Lloyd Comments: An extremely uncomfortable flight. After getting through check in and passport control at Heraklion, which for those who have been there will know is an effort in itself, the last thing you want is a plane that makes you want to swim home instead.
We were on a large plane, an airbus something or other, with 2 aisles with seats 3 on the right 3 in the middle 3 on the left - typical of charter flights cramming as many on as possible.
I'm only 5"3 so usually have enough room even on small planes to get comfortable but not this one. The backs of the seats only came just below my neck so no real head rest at all. Not much left to say really the width of the seats were minimal, and the overall comfort of them was horrendous. The news that our 3 1/2 hour flight at half 4 in the morning had been extended to 4.10 hours because of strong winds didn’t go down well.
As for on the flight, the last thing everyone wanted at that time was constant pa announcements, and during turbulence a seatbelt announcement that sounded like an air raid warning. After going to the toilet during the flight I came out to be crammed in the aisle by the cabin crew who were literally standing there with a trolley blocking the aisle having a good natter; and continued to chat having seen a queue build up from the toilets. The 'meals' are not worth mentioning, a stodgy breakfast with dried out beans and a teaspoon sized pot of orange juice.
Will never fly with monarch again. Meals - pathetic, cabin - crew pathetic, comfort - pathetic.
Monarch - pathetic.

Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Larnaca Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: No Submitted By: J Stevens Comments: Monarch check in desk insisted in putting me, a disabled person, next to the window, don’t they realise that their seats are so uncomfortable once in that position a person can stiffen up and be unable to move.
Luckily the chap on the gate changed my seat to the first row and left an empty seat next to me, for which I thank him.
Coming back from JORDAN Nov 8th was HORRENDOURS.
Date of Travel: Aug 2006 Flying from: Glasgow International Airport Flying to: Sanford International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: No Submitted By: Not Specified Comments: Chose Monarch thinking it would be a better flight than the one with MyTravel the previous year, how wrong could I be. No in-flight entertainment worth talking about, food poor, toilets awful, staff ok but not perfect.
